What to do when they say you're too expensive + 8 new UGC jobs

๐Ÿ“ง UGC Community #86 | December 19, 2025

You followed our advice from last week. You didn't just send a number; you sent a professional 3-Tier Proposal.

Then, the email comes back.

"We love your work, but these rates are a bit higher than we anticipated. Do you have any flexibility?"

Panic sets in. You want the deal. Youโ€™re about to type: "No worries! I can knock $100 off."

Stop.

When you instantly lower your price, you tell the brand two things:

  1. Your original price was made up.

  2. You are desperate for work.

There is a better way to save the deal without devaluing your work. Today, weโ€™re teaching you the art of the "Scope Pivot."

LOOKING FOR UGC JOBS?

Find customers on Roku this holiday season

Now through the end of the year is prime streaming time on Roku, with viewers spending 3.5 hours each day streaming content and shopping online. Roku Ads Manager simplifies campaign setup, lets you segment audiences, and provides real-time reporting. And, you can test creative variants and run shoppable ads to drive purchases directly on-screen.

Bonus: weโ€™re gifting you $5K in ad credits when you spend your first $5K on Roku Ads Manager. Just sign up and use code GET5K. Terms apply.

[THE DEEP DIVE] How to Negotiate Without Losing Your Worth

The golden rule of negotiation is simple: Never lower the price for the same amount of work.

If the price goes down, the value you provide must also go down. This protects your hourly rate and maintains your professional integrity.

Here are three ways to handle the "Budget Objection" like a pro.

1. The Scope Chop (Remove Deliverables) If they can't afford the "Growth" package, don't give it to them for the price of the "Tester" package. Instead, offer to strip away features to meet their budget.

  • The Script: "I completely understand working within a specific budget. Iโ€™d love to make this work for you. If we need to get closer to [Lower Price], we can certainly do that by removing the raw footage and reducing the usage rights from 6 months to 3 months. Does that adjustment work for you?"

2. The Volume Discount (Get More to Give Less) Only offer a discount if they commit to more work. This turns a one-off rejection into a recurring income stream.

  • The Script: "Typically, my rate for a single video is firm. However, if you are looking to lower the cost-per-video, I can offer a 15% discount if we book a 3-month retainer (4 videos/month). This gives you consistent content at a better rate, and gives me stability. Would you be open to discussing a retainer?"

3. The "Portfolio" Play (Last Resort) If you genuinely love the brand and just want the portfolio piece, you can lower the rate, but you must ask for non-monetary value in return.

  • The Script: "Since I'm a huge fan of the brand, I can come down to [Price] for this first partnership. In exchange, I would ask for a written testimonial on LinkedIn and permission to use this video in my own marketing case studies. Is that a fair trade?"

Can you scale without chaos?

It's peak season, so volume's about to spike. Most teams either hire temps (expensive) or burn out their people (worse). See what smarter teams do: let AI handle predictable volume so your humans stay great.

[PRO TIP OF THE WEEK]

The "Walk Away" Power. Sometimes, a brand's budget is simply too low (e.g., they want a video for $50). In these cases, the most professional move is to refer them elsewhere.

  • The Script: "It sounds like we might be a bit far apart on budget for this project, which I totally understand. I might not be the right fit this time, but please keep me in mind if budgets open up in Q3!"

Often, this confidence makes them realize they can't lowball you, and they miraculously "find" the budget to hire you anyway.
